Description
Also called Primrouge for their striking red color, Akanes are juicy and flavorful with a firm texture. They are ready for harvest in mid- to late August. Like many early season apples, they do not store well, and should be consumed within a month or so of harvest.

History
Akanes date back to 1937 where they were raised in Japan. They are a cross between a Jonathan and Worcester Pearmain. In 1970 they began to be distributed commercially.
