Von Zuccalmaglio’s Reinette

Von Zuccalmaglio’s Reinette is a small to medium apple with a few red patches or stripes over a golden-green base. Its fine-grained, cream-colored flesh is crispy and juicy.  This aromatic heirloom has a good balance of sweet and tart flavor, with hints of pineapple, pear, and strawberry.

Discovered: 1878 Grevenbroich, Germany

Parentage: Unknown

Harvest: Late Season

Diedrich Uhlhorn, Jr. (1843-1915), a German engineer and fruit grower, developed Von Zuccalmaglio’s Reinette in 1878 in Grevenbroich, Germany. He gave the new apple his wife’s maiden name, Von Zuccalmaglio.

This heirloom ripens in late October, and like most late-season apples, it keeps well for the winter.
